The following morning, Hope rose exceptionally early only to find herself completely alone in her parents’ house. She laid in bed for several minutes, staring up at the ceiling as the events from the evening before unfolded in her mind.

“Ugh…” she groaned and at last pulled herself up, throwing her feet over the side of the bed with a feeling of dismay. The birds outside were chirping, blissfully unaware of the turmoil building up inside the home they were currently circling. She reached over towards the nightstand where her phone was sitting, hoping to see a call from her father with an update as she knew that he had stayed the night at the station. No such luck.

She had a few missed texts from Felix, letting her know he was going to be heading to the station early that morning. Hope elected that she too would head straight there after getting herself dressed and ready. She contemplated breakfast, but really, she wasn’t sure if she could stomach it. The night before she had spent a considerable amount of time with Felix at the crime scene, and she had received a call from her father telling her not to wait up as he was dealing with, what he referred to as, idiotic nonsense. He had also told her that a formal arrest had been made, so her mother along with Felix’s stepfather had spent the night in jail cells.

Hope imagined that someone would be getting fired at the station by the end of this mess. Then again, her father had always been fairly good at not allowing emotional attachment to get the best of him. Even he had to admit that the evidence didn’t look good and using his authority as chief to get his wife out of jail for a night after the detonator had been found in her purse would not look great on his part. It would be blown up in the papers as him abusing his power. And, he had only been instated earlier that year. He was still gaining the trust of the people of Washington, D.C. and things were going to be bad now whether his wife was proven innocent or not. People would be looking at him through a magnifying glass now.

Hope snagged the keys to her mother’s car before driving out to the police station where she was abruptly greeted by a number of news vans. “Ms. Harper!” a few reporters started shouting the moment she stepped out, all hoping to get some sort of quote from her regarding her mother’s arrest. The arrest of the wife of Washington, D.C.’s police chief in correlation to a homicide by bomb was bound to attract attention. It was probably not wise, she decided, to have pulled in at the front and to have done so driving her mother’s car.

“Buzz off!” was the only comment Hope offered any of the news reporters situated outside the police station as they held microphones up to her face. She
